Effect of geological heterogeneities on reservoir storage capacity and migration of CO2 plume in a deep saline fractured carbonate aquifer

In a reservoir characterization study of the Hontomín deep saline aquifer, impact geological heterogeneities on storage capacity and migration CO2 plume is explored. This work presents, for first time, very long-term (up to 200 years) simulations injection into naturally fractured Sopeña Formation, lower Jurassic age, at Hontomín. was simulated as dual permeability case with Eclipse compositional software. The matrix carbonate quite low (0.5 mD) thus fluid flow through fractures dominates. dissected by eight normal faults which limited its south-east extension divided it several segments. effect tested scenario-based modeling variation parameters characterizing heterogeneity within realistic limits based other similar formations. approach worked well in where database completely scarce. migration, capacity, pressure, were each influenced diverse ways incorporating particular types heterogeneities. substantial (by factors up ∼2.8×), compared migration. As increased, markedly decreased, whilst an increase porosity significantly increased it. vertical gas homogeneous base relatively larger heterogeneous cases, accumulated underneath caprock via hydrodynamic trapping. It also observed that, saturation rock layers from top bottom high case, most stored topmost layer. contrast, movement horizontal ratio small. transmissibility pressure only when reached their vicinity.
